Title: How to Strike a Ball - with the help of Fernando Torres
The key to striking a ball correctly is not how powerful your leg is (although it helps) or if you have the best boots or trainers (although this can help too) - it is all down to timing.
If you are kicking a dead ball (either a free kick, corner or dead kick) these are the key points and techniques you need to emply to be able to effortlessly kick the ball with great speed and distance.
1. The Approach:
When approaching the ball do not run to fast as this makes it more difficult to keep your balance. The power of the kick is generated by the speed of the kicking leg hitting the ball and timing it correctly rather than the speed of the run up to the ball.
2. The Supporting Leg:
As you approach the ball plant your supporting leg next the ball. Your supporting foot should be pointed in the direction where you want the ball to go.
3. The Kicking Leg:
Ensure that your striking foot is tensed and locked at the ankle. If it isn't it will effect the power and accuracy of the kick and could cause ankle injuries.
Strike the ball with your instep (where your boots are laced).
Lean your shoulders back and kick the underneath of the ball (near to where it touches the floor) if you require height and distance.
Lean forward and kick in the middle of the ball if you require speed and accuracy.
Keep you eye on the ball and ensure your kicking leg follows right through the ball.
